Rice Fields in Sumatra

The rice fields in north-central Sumatra let you witness the most exciting scenery you’ll ever see. The area around here is excellent for trekking with its lush green, hilly and fertile landscape with plenty of rice fields and other crops. The terraced rice fields provide a reliable food source for the local communities. Supplementary crops such as caladium, sweet potato, cassava, chafe, sago palm and bread fruit were also readily available.

The traditions of protecting nature and supplying food complimented each other well in this indigenous system. External inputs such as seeds, chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and irrigation were not required.
