A Stone Sarcophagi in Sumatra

The Batak people are tough, vigorous, intelligent people who often do conspicuously well in the world outside.

In Batak’s own homeland, much of the creative energy seems to have gone into tomb-making. Traditionally, they carved huge stone sarcophagi for their dead, decorated with staring faces and squatting just like the one in the photo.
